Those familiar with the acoustic guitar scene will most certainly remember Sammy Vomácka from the early seventies. Frequent touring with David Qualey and Werner Laemmerhirt made Prague-born Vomácka a well-known name especially in Germany. Now, Vomácka returns with a new impressive album. Stretching from early country blues to Fats Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose”, Vomácka presents us more than a dozen of standards in his pristine steelstring fingerpicking style, “accompanied” by his own, so pleasently rough singing. Down to earth and without any cosmetical disguise, that is Vomácka’s approach to music. And he succeeds in transferring that enlightning directness to the so often digitally sterile compact disc, thus sometimes creating a degree of authenticity, that the listener might easily imagine Big Bill Broonzy playing in a St Louis corner café - metaphorically speaking, of course. You simply can’t help reaching out for a good glass of Bourbon while listening to this most refreshing record.
