BIOGRAPHIE Gitarrespielen hat er buchstäblich im Wohnzimmer des legendären Reverend Gary Davis gelernt, wo er den Blues des großen alten Mannes in sich aufsog. Davis war ihm bis zu seinem Tod 1972 Inspiration und Freund zugleich. Der Blues bildete dann auch die Grundlage von Woody Manns eigener Karriere, die ihn schon bald mit Musikern wie dem Gitarristen John Fahey, der Sängerin Jo-Ann Kelly und den Veteranen Bukka White und Son House zusammenbrachte. Jahre später tauchte Woody in die Welt des Jazz ein und wurde zum Schüler des berühmten Pianisten Lennie Tristano. Inzwischen hat er seine Wurzeln aus Ragtime, Blues und Jazz längst zu einer hochentwickelten eigenen Sprache verwoben, die sich einer allzu einfachen Einordnung erfolgreich entzieht. „Gäbe es eine Kategorie, die einfach nur ,großartige Musik´ hieße, würde Woodys Spiel dazugehören,“ so John Fahey. Dem amerikanischen Guitar Player genügte zur Beschreibung von Manns CD „Stairwell Serenade“ ein einziges Wort: „Phänomenal!“ Woody Mann hat mehrere Lehrvideos veröffentlicht, organisiert Workshops und ist Autor der vielbeachteten Werke „Six Early Blues Guitarists“, „The Complete Robert Johnson“ und „The Anthology Of Blues Guitar“. Woody Mann ist der Fingerstyle-Gitarrist, der heute am stärksten die direkte Verbindung von Tradition und Moderne repräsentiert. |
He learned to play the guitar quite literally in the living-room of the legendary Reverend Gary Davis, where he imbibed the blues of the grand old man. Until his death in 1972, Davis remained both an inspiration and a friend to Woody Mann. The blues were also the cornerstone to Mann’s own career, and it was the blues that brought him together with musicians of the stamp of guitarist John Fahey, vocalist Jo-Ann Kelly and the veterans Bukka White and Son House. Years later, Woody plunged into the world of jazz and started studying with the famous pianist Lennie Tristano. He has since woven his roots in ragtime, in blues and in jazz to a highly developed personal language that cannot be easily categorized. “If there was such a category as simply ‘great music’, Woody’s music would no doubt belong to it,” says John Fahey. The American guitar player had a single word to describe Mann's CD “Stairwell Serenade”: phenomenal! Woody Mann has published several educational videos, has organized workshops and is the author of the much respected works “Six Early Blues Guitarists”, “The Complete Robert Johnson” and “The Anthology Of Blues Guitar”. Woody Mann is the finger-style guitarist who best represents the direct link between the traditional and modern worlds. |
