Paul Millns war fünfzehn Jahre alt, als er in der Fänge
der „Black American Music“ geriet. Im Radio war Ray Charles
zu hören und der junge Paul war hingerissen von Kraft und Emotion
dieser Stimme. Später trampte er von Norfolk nach London, um
sein Idol live zu erleben und Soul- und Blues-Platten hören zu
können. Pauls eigene Karriere startete gegen Ende der 60er Jahre,
als er begann, mit der gesamten britischen Blues-Prominenz zu spielen.
Ein zweiter wichtiger Einfluß war das damalige Singer/Songwriter-Movement,
speziell Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell und Tim Hardin, und so war es nur
natürlich, diese Einflüsse zu verbinden. In Deutschland
wurde er durch seinen Auftritt beim legendären „Rockpalast“
bekannt. Sein Talent als Songwriter führte auch zu einer fruchtbaren
Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstlern.
Elkie Brooks und Bonnie Tyler gehören zu denen, die seine Songs
coverten. Paul Millns ist eine künstlerische Persönlichkeit
voller Charisma. Seine kraftvolle, rauchige Stimme läßt
Gefühle zu Klängen werden. Die Bandbreite seines Songwritings
ist beachtlich: von Country-Rock über Soul bis zu „Late-Night-Blues“
gibt es kaum eine Atmosphäre, die er mit seinem expressiven Gesang
nicht heraufzubeschwören vermag. Seine Themen sind soziale, politische
und persönliche Reflexionen, oft mit einem unterschwelligen trockenen
Humor vorgetragen. Seine Poesie fängt die Zerbrechlichkeit des
Glücks ebenso plastisch ein wie den Alltag. Seine Songs sind
stark und zärtlich, kraftvoll und mild. „Unsung Heroes“
ist sein zehntes Album und zeigt ihn zusammen mit seiner Band in Höchstform.
Paul Millns was fifteen years old when he got caught up in the wiles
of “black American music.” Ray Charles was singing on
the radio, and young Paul has captivated by the power and emotion
in that voice. He later tramped from Norfolk to London in order to
experience his idol live and to take in soul and blues records. Paul's
own career took off at the end of the 1960s when he began performing
with the entire roster of British blues VIPs. Another important influence
on him at the time was the singer/songwriter movement, especially
Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Tim Hardin. It seemed perfectly natural
to link these influences together. In Germany he became well-known
thanks to an appearance at the legendary “Rockpalast”.
His talent as a songwriter also led to a productive collaboration
with other artists.
Elkie Brooks and Bonnie Tyler are among the singers who made cover
versions of his songs. Paul Millns has an artistic personality filled
with charisma. His vigorous, smoky voice transforms feeling into sound.
The range of his songwriting is impressive: from country rock to “late-night
blues”, passing by soul, there is hardly an atmosphere that
he is not able to conjure with his expressive lyrics. His topics focus
on social, political and personal reflections, often narrated with
an undercurrent of dry humor. His poetry captures the fragility of
happiness as sharply as it does everyday life. His songs are strong
and tender, vigorous and gentle. “Unsung Heroes” is his
tenth album and reveals him and his band in top form.
