Das VILLA-LOBOS-DUO belebt das internationale Konzertleben mit Kammermusik der exquisiten Art seit November 1992. Mit seinem einfühlsamen und flexiblen Spiel begeistert es nicht nur Publikum und Presse, sondern inspiriert immer wieder Komponisten zu neuen Werken. Neben Uraufführungen und Ersteinspielungen ist es die Mischung aus klassischen, jazzigen und volkstümlichen Elementen, die die Programme des VILLA-LOBOS-DUO vielseitig und lebendig macht. Darüber hinaus gewinnt der Moment der Improvisation für beide Interpreten zunehmend an Bedeutung .
In Fachkreisen genießt das VILLA-LOBOS-DUO derzeit den Ruf als bestes Ensemble dieser Art, was die beiden CD-Produktionen Reflexoes und Orange Moon bei Acoustic Music Records eindrucksvoll belegen. Im Juni 2004 erscheint das neue Album TANZOLOGIA, mit Kompositionen von Bloch, Bogdanovic, Heitor Villa-Lobos und Atanas Ourkouzounov.
Außerdem ist das VILLA-LOBOS-DUO Gast auf Festivals in Österreich, Deutschland, Slowenien und Dänemark.
Im Juni 2004 erschien das Album TANZOLOGIA, mit Kompositionen von Bloch, Bogdanovic, Heitor Villa-Lobos und Atanas Ourkouzounov.
Zum 50.Todestag von Heitor Villa-Lobos veröffentlicht das Villa-Lobos-Duo ihre Tribut-CD ‚The White Indian’.

The Villa-Lobo-Duo has enthused its audience with rousing interpretations of innovative music for cello and guitar ever since 1992. With repertoire, consisting of works written mostly after 1900, the ensemble has performed throughout Europe and recorded two highly acclaimed CDs for the German label Acoustic Music Records – “Reflexoes” and “Orange Moon.” A new program entitled “Tanzologia” was released in 2004 under the same label. It includes works by E. Bloch, A. Ourkouzounov, D. Bogdanovic and H. Villa-Lobos.
On the 50th anniversary of the death of Heitor Villa-Lobos the duohas paid its respects with a tribute album called “The White Indian”.
The duo drew attention with its extraordinary programms, in which improvisation became an essential element of the music making process, eliminating boarders between classical music, jazz, blues, and folkmusic. Characteristic for the VILLA-LOBOS-DUO is also the communicative presentation of their music: ”We want our audience to be involved,” stated the two musicians in an interview for the German Radiostation NDR.

Der neue Gitarrist an der Seite von Sven Holger Philippsen ist Boyan Karanjuloff aus Sofia und so hat die Umbesetzung die musikalische Orientierung des Ensembles neu geprägt: Das in der Vergangenheit vorwiegend lateinamerikanische Repertoire wird mit „Tanzologia“ um osteuropäische Klänge bereichert. Das Villa-Lobos-Duo begeistert mit innovativer Spieltechnik und brillanter Umsetzung der kompletten (!) „Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5“ für acht Celli und Sopran des Brasilianers Heitor Villa-Lobos und mit beherzter Spiellust bei Atanas Ourkouzounovs „Bulgarian Rock“ gleichermaßen. Nachhaltig beeindruckend ist außerdem die weltweite Ersteinspielung des gesamten „From Jewish Life“ von Ernest Bloch, welche die Ausnahmestellung des Ensembles in der Besetzung Violoncello und Gitarre unterstreicht.
Seit Bestehen sind sich Presse und Publikum einig über die herausragende Qualität des Villa-Lobos-Duo. Dafür ist „Tanzologia“ ein weiterer, überzeugender Beweis.
The Villa-Lobos Duo is back again with both „Tanzologia“ and a new face. The guitarist at Sven Holger Philippsen’s side now is Boyan Karanjuloff from Sofia, Bulgaria. This new presence has given the ensemble’s musical orientation a new imprint: The repertoire, which was mainly Latin American in the past, has been enriched with eastern European sounds in „Tanzologia“. The Villa Lobos Duo enthralls the listener with its innovative technique and brilliant reading of the complete (!) „Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5“, originally written by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos for eight cellos and a soprano voice, and also of Atanas Ourkouzounov’ s „Bulgarian Rock“, which they render with lively and lusty play. The world première recording of Ernst Bloch’s „From Jewish Life“ also leaves a lasting impression. It highlights the uniqueness of this ensemble made up of cello and guitar. Ever since the Villa Lobos Duo was created, media and public have agreed on the exceptional quality of their output. „Tanzologia“ is one more convincing piece of evidence of this.

The phenomenal musical legacy of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos can hardly be expressed in words. The Villa-Lobos-Duo, which is made up of guitarist Boyan Karanjuloff and cellist Sven Holger Philippsen, has paid its respects on this 50th anniversary of the death of Heitor Villa-Lobos and released a tribute album called “The White Indian”.
These two trained musicians, whose refined technical culture, elegant tonality and nuanced performance captivate listeners, have included interpretations of jazz musicians like Chic Corea and the Brazilian metal band Sepultura. The duo demonstrates creativity, independence and a fascinating dialogue with their instruments – even in arrangements by Dilermando Reis and Guinga – together with the guitarist, author and expert in Brazilian music Ahmed El-Salamouny. With “The White Indian”, they have created a genuine watershed in new classical music.
