After many years in assorted duo combinations and for the first time since 1996, Frank Haunschild can again be heard with a band. Its name, the Electric Trio, says it all, even though the acoustic nylon-string occasionally appears. The electric music on the menu offers a close encounter of the pleasant and relaxed kind in a colorful kaleidoscope of styles, moods and grooves. The pieces are all compositions by Haunschild himself, who then worked on the arrangements in tandem with his fellow musicians.
The first title “Between the Sweets” already makes you prick up your ears. After a few bars, one thing is immediately made clear: The chef in person is serving up these dishes! A groovy background, a melody of delightful falling cascades, a quiet middle part, its melody on a fretless bass, and the journey takes off with a blues-crunched, distorted guitar and using an octave divider later on. But before you get too used to it, the foot is taken off the gas pedal and an acoustic love song sounds, before it turns funky and energized with the title song of the album “City Lights”. Other highlights are “Montescudaio” and its reminiscence of reggae, the earthy “Blue Monday” and the sensitive and fanciful “Rio-NY-Rio”.
The two co-musicians are well-known players from the Cologne jazz scene, and here they stand by their frontman in full professional capacity, generating highlights and brilliant backup. Occasional vocal sorties remain rare and are meant to accompany the melody and contribute to the interesting and diversified effect. Altogether a very buoyant and tuneful production with singalong potential that sticks in your mind. Don’t miss a listen-in!
