Back in the 1930s, Merline Johnson, billed as “The Yas Yas Girl”, used to interpret spirited and ribald songs about the sad and pleasant aspects of life as a woman. And she did so with such vim, that her music still holds fascination to this day.
Singer Izi Onslow, from Tarrant Gunville (England), is right in the tradition of Merline Johnson and other artists of that period. It’s what blues pianist Christian Bleiming from Münster heard as he strolled through the main street of Laroquebrou in the south of France (he was performing at the biggest boogie-woogie festival of western Europe there) and heard Izi Onslow singing in a bar. It was the beginning of a musical collaboration that took the two to the UK Boogie Festival in Cornwall in 2017 and straight to a recording studio in 2019. The result is the current “Blues Everywhere” LP, where “old” blues and boogie come across in a trendy style, which is also due to the guitar accompaniment of Amandus Grund (also from Münster).
Good music is timeless, and so is good blues, obviously.
