"Nachtfarben" (Night Colors), a chamber suite scored for piano, cello, voice, double bass, drums and percussion, is a musical adventure of seldom heard intensity, a nocturnal sound sculpture bringing together elements from around the world, an acoustic kaleidoscope, a stimulating trip. Pianist Ralf Schmid is a musician who easily transcends stylistic boxes and celebrates classical, jazz and pop music with conviction and at the highest level. "Nachtfarben" is a recording of the prizewinner’s concert held during the awarding ceremonies of the renowned Jazz Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg in December 2001. "Nachtfarben" rewards the listener’s attention with a surprising Gesamtkunstwerk consisting of composition, improvisation and exciting dialogues. The laudatory speech expressed it well: "Ralf Schmid gives jazz new impulses."
