The VILLA-LOBOS DUO was back in 2004 with a new CD and a new face. The new guitarist at Sven Holger Philippsen’s side is Boyan Karanjuloff from Sofia.
The album juxtaposes first-class original compositions and excellent own transcriptions, haunting Jewish songs by Ernest Bloch and rhythmically rousing music from Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. A reminiscence of earlier days is the clever arrangement of the complete (!) “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5” for eight cellos and soprano by Heitor Villa-Lobos. This is the world premiere of this work in a transcription for cello and guitar, as is the complete cycle “From Jewish Life” by Bloch. Thanks to its proximity to the original and Karanjuloff’s innovative performance techniques, the arrangement leaves no wish unfulfilled. It carries the listener off into mysterious moonlit nights and the untamed jungles of the Amazon.
Ever since the founding of the VILLA-LOBOS DUO, press and public have been aware of the high-quality musical output of this exceptional ensemble. “TANZOLOGIA” is one more perfectly convincing piece of evidence.
