Four virtuosos, one ensemble. And by the same token four completely different characters with various qualities: Ged Brockie as the creative composer, Nigel Clark as the in-demand sideman, Malcolm McFarlane as the experienced live musician and Kevin Mackenzie as the jazz and folk guitarist. As the Scottish Guitar Quartet, they prove the fact that the whole is sometimes greater than the sum of its parts: Together, they reveal how to conjure an independent sound cosmos out of Celtic influences, stylish jazz, modern classical and border-free world music. Most notable in their work is their coherence, when even the most complex guitar lines are woven together with playful lightness.
Thus, their current “Best of” album represents not only a summary of five years of successful work, but also, above all, a fascinating demonstration of their work after “thousands of hours of practice, traveling, composing and recording”, as Ged Brockie explains. The result: superb acoustic guitar music for those who know how to appreciate a broad horizon.
