The high rank occupied in the west by the guitar as a popular instrument, is taken up in Turkey by the three-stringed baglama (saz). In his home country, baglama virtuoso and graduate in ethnomusicology Erol Parlak, enjoys the kind of appreciation and popularity of an artist, indeed, of a “star” that can hardly be imagined elsewhere. Together with four of his instrumental students, Parlak recorded the album “Esik,” which was released here under the title “Schwelle zum Licht”. The quintet celebrates the highest level of performance culture and virtuosity. The musicians combine traditional Anatolian melodies, stylistic orientations and performance techniques with their own individual artistic interpretation. Even Mozart’s own “Turkish March” resounds in a quite original musical cloak. The quintet concertizes in Turkey and abroad and was already invited to appear on TV many times.
