Alexander Kilian was only 17 years old when he was feted as “Alexander the Great” for his solo debut “Reflections”. In the meantime, the young string virtuoso has joined the “Nuevo Cuarteto”, the “Yellow Mallets”, and the world music ensemble “The Shin”. Now the nylon-string guitarist has found an ideal counterpart in the multi-instrumentalist Gerald Dorsch, who plays vibraphone, marimba, steel drum and darabouka. How perfectly these two complement each other is audible on “Melting Pot”,
The two artists weave together the seriousness of jazz with Mediterranean joie de vivre and the atmospheres of the East European cultural area. They also integrate their complex compositions in the strict structures of minimal music, or ornament them with expansive improvisations. Furthermore, the charming singer Nandita and the trumpet player Stefan Bender contribute additional daubs of color on this debut opus by a highly virtuosic duo, which exhibits fascinating musical esthetics and great musical vision.
