It’s not unusual for musicians to fuse influences from around the world. But very few artists bridge continents and styles as naturally as French/Madagascar guitarist Solo Razafindrakoto, aka Solorazaf.
“Covered with Love/Reprises par amour,“ presents Solorazaf’s engaging one-man-band approach to the guitar, which combines Malagasy guitar traditions with a love for rock and pop music. Playing with a sound that fits somewhere between clean jazz and acoustic guitar tones, Solorazaf dedicates half of the album to Jimi Hendrix, delivering tunes including “Angel,” “Hey Joe,” and “Crosstown Traffic” in ways that you’ve never heard them before.
Solorazaf pays tribute to his former employer Miriam Makeba by covering her “Pata Pata,” he presents a beautiful chord-melody arrangement of the Beatles’ “Yesterday,” and grooves heavily on the South African traditional “Malaika.”
