For some time now, Markus Segschneider has been praised for “stunning guitar playing” (Bridge guitar reviews) and an “overflowing diversity of ideas” (Akustik Gitarre). So far, this artist from Cologne has already shown up in a countless different musical projects, for example as member of various band formations, as a coveted studio musician, as an arranger and composer. He has hitherto contributed to over 80 CDs (as of 2008).
“Woodcraft” is Segschneider’s first strictly solo guitar CD – a single acoustic guitar, no overdubs, everything on this CD sounds as if it had been performed in concert. The fact that this CD is nevertheless extremely entertaining is probably due to the uncannily large stylistic repertoire of stylistic approaches that join seamlessly in his compositions. One concert review speaks of a “brilliant musical stroll through moods, sonorities and landscapes that is received with enthusiasm by the audience". This applies to “Woodcraft” as well.
This recording features many playing techniques on the acoustic guitar - and that they do not all sound like they are being used as an end in themselves has to do with the captivating melodies, an extraordinarily harmonic language and a joy at playing that immediately sweeps up the listener in its wake.
