This collection of contemporary compositions for three guitars is intended to help make the range of styles found in modern popular music accessible to younger music students and guitar ensembles. Their low level of difficulty means that they are ideally suited for beginners’ performances as well as group lessons in music schools. Alongside well known folk songs this compilation also includes groove numbers, swing blues compositions, a Spanish dance and a melancholy piece with a Latin beat. It concludes with an atonal composition featuring changing time signatures, which is to be recommended as a competition entry.
The three guitar parts are almost entirely arranged as single note voicings and can therefore be mastered in their entirety by players of a comparable technical level. This enables the players to swop parts without difficulty, so that no one need feel disadvantaged or less capable than the others. In my experience, this is an important aspect of teaching which encourages a positive group atmosphere and helps build the students’ self esteem.
By giving each voicing to several different players, these pieces can also be used most effectively within the context of larger guitar groups or orchestras.
