It was under the tongue-in-cheek heading “2 Glorreiche 7” (best translated as “Twice Good, Bad and Ugly”) that the two acoustic guitarists appeared on the scene in 2004 to pay homage to their heroes with a mix of slapstick and virtuosity. But those heroes were not named Monroe, Cooper and Grant, but rather Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini and John Williams – the fabulous composers of immortal soundtracks. But whether they are producing pop music or setting large-scale compositions with an orchestral touch, these two trained musicians from Münster and unabashed film fans expertly cook up all manner of monumental productions for twelve strings. On their new release, “Strike Back”, the signature tunes of cult series like “Tatort”, “Dallas”, “Die Olsenbande” (“The Olsen Gang”), or “Raumpatrouille Orion” (“Space Patrol Orion”) radiate with unheard brilliance. It’s astonishing to hear what unexpected turns such classics take after being rearranged by Helm & Heik – they are virtuosic, witty, clever. Because with their unfettered joy of play and a few mischievous twinkles in their eyes, Helm & Heik prove that profound skilled and subtle humor are by no means mutually exclusive It’s the finest popcorn cinema for the ears.
