Christian Rannenberg’s first solo CD “Blues” was released by ACOUSTIC MUSIC in 1998. At the time, the German pianist had already earned himself a solid place in the international blues scene. In the 1970s, he played with the most famous German blues formations and in 1982 moved to Chicago and then finally, in 1990, to the San Francisco Bay area. Christian Rannenberg’s CD, “Cool Blue,” once again betrays this pianist’s class. Everything that makes up modern as well as tradition-conscious blues piano is represented on this album: grooving boogies (“Honey From Amsterdam”), jazzy swing shuffles (“Bye Bye Tiger”) or a slow blues together with singer Aron Burton (“Any Day But Today”). One of the high points is no doubt “Since You’ve Been Gone” with B. Plant on harmonica and Richard Bargel on guitar. And by the way: Christian Rannenberg is not only a gifted blues pianist, but also a respectable singer and composer. “Cool Blue” is an album that brings all the facets of the blues and their protagonist Rannenberg to light. A delicious tidbit for blues fans.
