French guitarist Émilie Fend interprets 18th and 20th century guitar music on Con Anima with empathy and tonal sensitivity, making guitar music off the beaten track accessible with her selection of compositions.
From a dreamy Phantasia by Bach's contemporary David Kellner (1670-1748), originally composed for lute, to a sonata by the Mexican composer Manuel María Ponce (1882-1948) and the well-known piece Syracuse by her compatriot Henri Salvador (1917-2008), she spans a musical arc. This catchy album also includes compositions by Japanese artist Tōru Takemitsu (1930-1996) as well as pieces by two Spaniards, Frederico Moreno Torroba (1891-1982) and Regino Sáinz de la Maza (1896-1981).
The result is recordings full of expressiveness and intensity, with wonderfully sparkling runs and precise and accentuated playing, all of which bear witness to a deep musical understanding. The fact that Émilie Fend, who was only born in 1995, completed her studies with distinction and has already been honoured with numerous prizes in her early years is self-explanatory after listening to this CD.
