“Hommage Au Jazz” is both a title and a program for this fine jewel of guitar music. Görtz interprets compositions for classical guitar that are interspersed with jazz elements, including works from the pens of Duke Ellington, Manuel Ponce and John Duarte. The music of Django Reinhardt is given a special place of honor.
Aside from the innovative thematic concept of this CD, Görtz’s wonderfully clear line is what captivates the listener, as does his commanding technique and his deep sense of expressiveness. He savors the quieter moments as well as the dynamic eruption and burning urgency of up-tempo passages. Leo Brouwer has also found unequivocal words that bear witness to Günther Görtz's "excellence in his professional performance level", calling him a "mature professor and guitarist". Little can be added to this except, perhaps, that Görtz's musical power has rarely found a more suitable outlet than on this CD. An extraordinary recording that will win the heart of many a guitar fan!
"The classical guitarist Günther Görtz interprets compositions that explicitly work in jazz elements, including music by Duke Ellington, Manuel Ponce and John Duarte. Besides the innovative thematic concepts he brings to this CD, Görtz captivates the listener with his wonderfully transparent lines, elegant technique and profound sense of expression."
