Martin Luther, probably the first Christian “songwriter”, as it were, continues to inspire musicians to this day. The duo “Acoustic Colours”, with Elsa Ruiba (flute) and Stefan Griefingholt (guitar) has devoted itself in a very special way to many of the great reformer’s most well-known songs.
The arrangements made by Griefingholt to ferry Luther’s melodies into the present are rhythmically and harmonically attractive. Ruiba’s flute sounds warm and sensual when performing the original tunes, the improvisations that she devises to accompany the old melodies then are light and supple. The variations on “Vom Himmel hoch, da kommm ich her” (“From Heaven Above To Earth I Come”) sound fresh as a new day. Stephan Griefingholt also composed two cuts in the spirit of Luther.
