Sometimes it needs just a brief instant for music to find its way from our ears straight to our heart. The songs of singer and theater actress Serena Finatti and guitarist Andrea Varnier have the rare quality of immediately enchanting the audience. It's not by accident that the acoustic duo "Deja" earned the top spot in 2009 at the renowned Open Strings guitar festival in Osnabrück.
The interaction of the two classically-trained musicians, who met in 2006 in Udine, Italy, is remarkable: On "Laila", their debut album for Acoustic Music Records, the guitar and vocals play with each other intuitively, with elements from traditional Italian song, the classical musical tradition and the timeless art song with a theatrical flair. Varnier – who was a master student of Andrea DiMarco – convinces the listener with his great diversity of chords and melodies, with unexpected turns of phrase and highly imaginative ornamentations. And he finds a mirror image in the crystal clear and highly expressive voice of his partner Serena Finatti. It is a grand, exciting and fascinating debut by an unusual duo.
