With an international group of musicians (Belgium, Germany, USA) , the quartet (plus special guest) around the Munich saxophonist introduces itself mainly with its own compositions, convincing in their versatility, ambitious performance, and warm sound. The repertoire is distinguished by a spectrum ranging from romantic ballads to lively up tempo pieces and Latin American Rhythms.

Cool, hardbop, the Latin-spiced tonal language of someone like Stan Getz: on his latest production Serenity, Jason Seizer moves with tremendous ease between the greatly varied styles of Fifties and Sixties jazz. However, the Munich tenor saxophonist succeeds at the same time - and this is the enormous appeal of Serenity - in transporting his very own, unmistakable musical idiom into each song.

The result: despite the distinct reminiscences, Serenity sounds wonderfully modern and refreshingly up-to-date. The classic quartet setting with guitar certainly plays a large role in this. It not only opens the harmonically fascinating "free" spaces and tonal colors, but also leaves Seizer and his guitarist Peter Bernstein all the conceivable space for inspired improvisation and intensely tight musical dialogues. The experienced listener won't be surprised to hear that this album was recorded after a two-week live tour.

The current Klaus Ignatzek Quintet Live CD originated during a five-week tour in October of 1995. However, the instinctively sound interplay of these five top musicians cannot be attributed to this tour alone but is the result of working together for almost ten years! This is even more astonishing when considering the fact that each musician comes from a different country. The band's membership could hardly be more international. The repertoire of the Quintet's current CD consists of four compositions by Klaus Ignatzek: the powerful Quasi-Modal, the harmoniously complex Waltz for Jean-Louis, the rhythmically and harmoniously ingenious Return Voyage, and the atmospheric A Ballad for Booker. The shuffle Nails exhibits Claudio Roditi's compositional abilities. This spirited CD recording is rounded off by the familiar jazz standard Autumn Leaves. An enthusiastic audience takes care of the rest, giving this concert a deserving, even rousing setting.

Anyone who experiences this quintet live will know how energy-charged, gripping and electrifying this ensemble can be in its stage performance - many will already have wished to possess this concentration of explosive power on sound carrier. With African Flower, this wish has now been fulfilled: Ignatzek & Co. in absolute top form, digitally recorded at a jazz club in Rome. And since African Flower is an uncompromising live album, the five take the time for what they so excellently master, in ways that very few do: improvisation. Fiery trumpet solos by the two South Americans, Roditi and Bergalli, contrast with the wonderfully extended free flights on the piano, together with one of the best-coordinated rhythm groups as a swinging perpetuum mobile - in short, African Flower is modern jazz at its very best!

Klaus Ignatzek is an old friend. Ignatzek, who was born in 1954, has, worked his way to the top of the European jazz scene with his 35 releases to date as musician, composer and bandleader. The base of his music grows out of the jazz-born hardbop; a tonal language which he knows how to put to good use in an all-round and distinctive way. His piano playing is replete with nuances and surprising twists. His brilliant technique and sheer inexhaustible inspiration makes it clear that he is an incontestable member of that Pantheon of veterans of his instrument. Together with the Romanian vocalist Anca Parghel and Belgian bass player Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, Klaus Ignatzek has brought together one of the most interesting trios on the European jazz scene. The three of them have grown into a unit and often play together with a sense of freedom and equality, dipping into a repertoire that covers the complete history of jazz. The trio's newest production is a juicy morsel for those who love more intimate settings. Sensitive interaction meets with exciting intensity, exuberantly joyful playing toys with effortless virtuosity. Without resorting to clichés or having to set boundaries the three musicians centering around Klaus Ignatzek create their own microcosm which draws in fascinated listeners.

The Volker Schlott Quartet has now been in existence for the past 10 years - reason enough for an anniversary CD. There have been some minor changes in the membership during this time, and it has also stylistically developed beyond a pure jazz quartet. However, the foundation for the music of the Volker Schlott Quartet remains the compositions of the group's founder. The music on the current CD was created at the beginning of 1995 and contains reflections on concert trips of recent years and the impressions they left behind. Yet, the wide range of styles has been pursued for a long time with the intention of bringing ideas as independent and unconventional as possible into areas that are supposedly familiar. At the same time, the music's stylistic direction is less important than the feelings it stimulates, the moods it radiates, and the idea that it is communicative in every respect. The beginning of the CD with the "Farewell Song" therefore leaves a number of interpretations open - however, at the least the listener should say farewell to everyday life for just under an hour.
