She is restless, cosmopolitan and thirsty for knowledge: Only few artists have quite such an impressive CV as this singer and musician, who was born in Gera. Her solid education, which includes voice, piano, saxophone, clarinet and improvisation, took her to conservatories in Cologne, Maastricht and Amsterdam, all the way to New York. The compositions on her album “Fly Away“ were written in Harlem, New York. She is accompanied by a superbly variable and intelligently grooving quartet, which moves to and from bossa and modal, bebop and ballad with amazing surefootedness. The band leader sings in multi-lingually with a powerful voice, sensuous expression and the unmistakable character of an artist who is heartfelt in her desire to let the listener in on her profound musicality. This is an album, which almost miraculously makes the complex playful and innovation pleasantly familiar.

Ever since the early 90s, pianist and composer Joachim Raffel has steadily evolved into one of the most interesting personalities of German and European jazz. The ensemble with which he has recorded his seventh album, “Pieces & Pictures“, underscores the European character of his opus. This album once again reveals the extraordinarily exciting, multilayered quality in Raffel‘s work: In his mature and personal style, influences from the blues, modern jazz, improvised music and world music find their way to suggestions of classical and contemporary music. For pieces like “Radio Dreams“ and „Eye Song“, Raffel even coined the term “pop imaginaire“. A wonderful band backs him in turning his visions into reality by creating for the listener and explorer a new-sounding, enduring listening experience that produce many exciting moments. More will be heard from and about them in the future.

"Without mincing words: Axel Zinowsky belongs in the Great Book of the German jazz guitar." That was the verdict passed by Alexander Schmitz, author of "Das Gitarrenbuch" (The Guitar Book) and "Jazzgitarristen" (Jazz Guitarists) on the string picker from Münster, who is adept at naturally combining influences from the classical and pop music fields. Zinowsky is an unusually "rounded off" guitarist, who is just as convincing on the E-guitar as when using nylon strings. He can really turn up the heat ("Ballad For Jimi", "Seven Steps To Heaven"), but also bathe in sheer poetry. This cosmopolite of the guitar is not only a remarkable instrumentalist, but also an exciting composer and arranger. Axel Zinowsky studied classical and pop music and now works as a professor of guitar at various music schools. Besides his quartet, he also works with Wayne Bartlett, Billy Cobham and Florian Poser and concertizes as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles.

“Mindwalk” - that is the title of the first CD by Axel Zinowsky, who is considered as one of Germany’s best jazz guitarists. The album contains ten compositions by Axel Zinowsky, showing individual style and inviting to a musical journey through the jazz scene of the nineties. From lyrical, atmospheric pieces, strongly influenced by the sound of the acoustic guitar, it comes across Latin grooves, blues and funk orientated compositions to rough, energetic uptempo swing pieces. Modern cross-over jazz on the highest level is presented here. Inspired arrangements create sound patterns of great intensity and rich contrasts. And what is more, with Axel Zinowsky and saxophonist Volker Winck two outstanding soloists are to be experienced.

Listening to the present record will make clear instantly that Mundell Lowe is a master of jazz guitar, elegant, never just "pleasant", rarely out for virtuosity show-offs but rather soft, modest, full of warmth and intimicy and a sideman who especially within the intimate context with Meurkens can prove in full measure his mastery of this art - in short: a gentleman on the face of things as well as in his playing. And the present album has got everything it takes to help this guitarists’ guitarist to gain all the long overdue recognition he so richly deserves also here in Europe, here in Germany. It is an album mostly of the softer kind, combining bewitchingly Lowe’s mature elegance with Meurkens’ - always calmly plaintive - harmonica voice: for a dialog among to wise men. press review "This CD is marked by gentle elegance, but even in an extremely gentle bossa like "Bolero para Paquito", the fire of passion can be kindled. It’s a CD for those very special moments in life." (OWL am Sonntag)

Peter O‘Mara has put together a very special work, conciously emphasizing the sound of his acoustic guitar. The seductive, delicate tones of this instrument have moved him to create a lyrical, vivd statement; to devise a light but powerfull music, that flows like a river and carries us along on a warm wave. O‘Mara found two partners who harmonize perfectly with his musical vision: Michael Hornek (keyboards and percussion) andHenning Seiverts (bass). The three musicians make use of technological possibilities, like sampling and multitrack recording, to conciously expand their limits. The ability of the trio to maintain their intimacy is owning to their common musical sense of sound, of space and for the atmospheric dimension of their music. The colorfull sound-collage extends from well-organized melodies to the shores of abstraction; from lively percussion acrobatics to majestic harmonics. The sound of this trio is cut from of a valuable material: smooth and closely woven, timeless; all superficiality is avoided. Music of intoxicating sensuosness.

Andreas Jaeger, who was originally inspired by pop and rock bands, later discovered blues and jazz. He consequently continued his learning at workshops with, amongst others, Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie, and finally ended up studying with Michael Sagmeister, the leading German jazz guitarist. Jaeger’s debut CD, produced by Michael Sagmeister, presents music in the fusion, blues, bossa-nova and samba genres. Jaeger plays with a polished, slightly erratic sound that testifies the guitarist’s blues roots. His lines are always elegant, but spiked with surprises and moments of tension. Press review "In addition, Andreas Jäger has experience as a pop & rock musician, and that is audible in his sound: it is open, somewhat off the wall, bluesy, lively. His concept of rhythm is personal, laid-back, Monk-like in its articulation, and it gives his playing a highly individual touch, within a context between jazz, Latin and funk." (Gitarre & Bass)

A few weeks ago, saxophonist Hubert Winter received the Bavarian Prize for Young Artists. His current CD “Saga Lydis” gives ample evidence of why. Winter not only proves his mettle as a masterful, sensitive player of the saxophone, but also as a surefooted composer. Together with his top-drawer quartet – Richie Beirach (piano), Dietmar Fuhr (bass) and Bill Egart (drums) – he recorded an album that includes five original compositions and sets new standards, Beirach’s moving “Leaving,” a subtle new arrangement of “Alone Together,” and the collective improvisation “Saga Lydis.” Standards for a contemporary jazz that suggestively surprises the listener by converging tradition – cool, bop, hardbop, pianistic delicacies of an almost classical kind – and zeitgeist to a new synthesis. Captivating, full of conflicts and emotional drive, at times uncomfortable, at times straight as an arrow, at times meditative and poetic, but always filled with substance: It’s not least the outstanding chemistry between the congenial protagonists that makes the album what it is.
